Change.gov has been set up as a window to watch the transition from Bush to Obama. We can expect many grand plans to be launched on this site. Don't expect them to remain there. At least not in their original form.
Under the America Serves tab, the following disturbing statement was made:
Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year.
Oh, really? He will require our children to volunteer? Volunteerism is an excellent way for people of all ages to spend their time. It benefits our communities and enriches our lives. Forcing our children to serve other masters outside of our influence and without our approval is another matter.
The future administration thought better of their gaffe and the site now reads ...
Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by setting a goal that all middle school and high school students do 50 hours of community service a year and by developing a plan so that all college students who conduct 100 hours of community service receive a universal and fully refundable tax credit ensuring that the first $4,000 of their college education is completely free.
That's better, Mr. Obama. Please continue to keep your hands off of our children.
